Install a high-quality French voice on iPhone

French Listening uses the French voices installed on your iPhone. Downloading an Enhanced or Premium French voice can provide clearer, more natural pronunciation.

Open Settings

Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

Open Accessibility

Select Accessibility.

Open the speech settings

On newer iOS versions, tap Read & Speak. On earlier iOS versions, tap Spoken Content.

Open Voices

Tap Voices to view voices available for download.

Choose your French locale

Select the locale that matches your learning preference:

  • French (France), for the fr-FR voices used by the app
  • French (Canada), for the fr-CA voices used by the app

Neither locale is universally better; choose the one you want to practice.

Download a higher-quality voice

Select a voice and download its Enhanced or Premium version when one is available. These voice files can be large, so Wi-Fi may be preferable.

Select it in French Listening

Return to the app:

  • Open Settings
  • Choose French (France) or French (Canada)
  • Select the downloaded voice
  • Tap Test voice

The exact names and arrangement of these settings may vary by iOS version. If you already see the voice in French Listening's voice picker, it is available to the app.
